How reliable are security assessments when they are performed entirely manually? In this Master’s thesis, you will explore how AI and static analysis can help support the (partial) automation of security assessments in software systems. You will work at the intersection of cybersecurity, software quality and AI while developing an approach with real-world impact.

Modern software systems are expected to comply with an increasing number of security requirements based on existing standards and best practices, such as encryption, authentication mechanisms and backup strategies. Assessing whether these security measures are correctly implemented is an important step in understanding the security posture of a system and identifying potential risks.

In practice, these security assessments are often performed manually by analyzing heterogeneous sources, including source code, technical documentation and infrastructure-as-code definitions. This process is time-consuming and error-prone.

The Assignment

This thesis explores opportunities to support or partially automate the assessment of security measures in software systems. However, it remains unclear to what extent such assessments can be reliably automated and which techniques are most suitable given the diversity of input sources and security requirements.

The goal of this thesis is to design and evaluate an approach for the (partial) automation of security assessments in software systems.
